UTS research degrees fall into three categories:
Each program involves an intense period of supervised study and research resulting in the submission of a thesis or dissertation. The thesis or dissertation is a substantial piece of writing, comprising up to 100,000 words for a doctoral thesis. The thesis can, however, be supplemented by material in forms other than print-on-paper. Regardless of format, all theses are substantial pieces of work and are examined by independent experts external to the University. The panel of examiners for a UTS thesis normally includes international experts in the relevant field.
Doctor of Philosophy programs
Course duration: 4 years
All faculties and the Institutes for International Studies and Sustainable Futures offer Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. A UTS PhD degree offers you advanced research training especially for a career in research and/or academia. It comprises independent research or creative work leading to an original and distinct contribution of knowledge in a discipline or field of study.

Professional doctorates
Course duration: 4 years
A UTS professional doctorate is characterised by independent research or creative work leading to an original, significant contribution to the knowledge base of a discipline or field of study which enhances professional practice. The flexibility of the professional doctorate allows you to undertake research relevant to your work environment and professional needs under the expert supervision of UTS researchers and academic staff members.

Master's Research
Course duration: 2 years
A UTS Master's level research program allows you to develop research skills and undertake original research or creative work which demonstrates an understanding of, and contribution to, scholarship.
