The Supervisory Process


If you wish, you may modify the Supervisory Framework to make it suitable for your discipline's and your University's normal procedures, and for your own personal style.

FOCUS KEY POINTS

1. Framing the candidature

Clarify expectations/goals/outcomes for thesis, project, candidature, employment


Negotiate s/s relationship and pattern of communication


Identify other support and resources needed and available



Ensure student formulates and writes up topic/problem/question &methodology for feasible project


Introduce student to the research environment







2. Guiding & monitoring progress

Maintain conversation on learning /research progress/career goals


Ensure formal University requirements are met

Hold regular meetings to check progress, give feedback on research & developing thesis

Connect student to discipline, professional, and scholarly networks


Establish practice for reading drafts and evaluation of drafts and seminar papers



3. Completing

Ensure closure 'when to stop' writing up.

Read chapters and give feedback

Nomination of examiners
