Supervisory Framework
The Supervisory Process

If you wish, you may modify the Supervisory Framework to make it suitable for your discipline's and your University's normal procedures, and for your own personal style.

FOCUS	KEY POINTS

1. Framing the candidature Clarify expectations/goals/outcomes for thesis, project, candidature, employment Negotiate s/s relationship and pattern of communication Identify other support and resources needed and available Ensure student formulates and writes up topic/problem/question &methodology for feasible project Introduce student to the research environment Deadline: approval for program of study. Check your institution's policy.	_ Begin to establish guidelines for candidature to include what follows and document as appropriate _ check mutual understanding as to how supervision is to be structured and the panel to operate _ alert student to any anticipated absences _ extra coursework, training in technical skills, language assistance, reading program required, or other resources, eg. for fieldwork _ need focus/engagement/fororiginality/ownership/persistence _ issues -manageable/feasible/ethical clearance/ Intellectual Property? _ introduce to relevant contacts in dept and other areas in the university working on similar/ relevant research interests _ inform student of relevant policies/requirements eg. Responsible Research practice, OH&S etc _ based on provisional 3 year costed detailed research plan

2. Guiding & monitoring progress Maintain conversation on learning /research progress/career goals Ensure formal University requirements are met Hold regular meetings to check progress, give feedback on research & developing thesis Connect student to discipline, professional, and scholarly networks Establish practice for reading drafts and evaluation of drafts and seminar papers Milestone: mid-term review (15/21 mths). Check your institution's policy.	_ use required reports and mid-term review as checkpoints and occasion for discussing student progress with student; and for panels to meet _ be alert to personal problems, procrastination _ assist in opportunities for developing experience/skills to support emerging career goals _ arrange seminar presentations, conference attendance, introduce to visitors etc., assist to publish if appropriate _ refer to professional assistance with writing if this is significant issue

3. Completing Ensure closure 'when to stop' writing up. Read chapters and give feedback Nomination of examiners	_ help student get a sense of how to judge what is 'enough' _ negotiate appropriate level of feedback _ advise if thesis is/is not ready for submission - consult on examiners
