Honours degrees in economics

The UTS Bachelor of Business (Honours) program in Economics provides an opportunity for advanced study in the economics disciplinary area.

The courses provides the ideal foundation for students who plan to pursue a career in applied research in business and government, or who plan to undertake Masters or Doctoral research studies.

The Economics honours program brings students up-to-date with the latest theoretical issues in economics. It makes students aware of the variety of research methods currently in use in these disciplines.

It is strongly recommended that students undertake this program on a full-time basis.

The program consists of 6 subjects, worth 75% and a thesis worth 25%. A preliminary week is held in the week prior to the commencement of the Autumn semester. The material covered in this week includes a maths/stats refresher, an introduction to the available research materials and the choice of a thesis topic and supervisor.

The value of the Honours program is threefold. It imparts valuable skills and knowledge; it sends a signal of competence and initiative for prospective employers; and it provides a basis for postgraduate study.

Thesis

The thesis is a piece of original theoretical or empirical work that demonstrates skills in formulating and executing a project in economics.

Typically the students use the first month of the Autumn semester to choose a thesis topic and supervisor. This process starts during the preliminary week when sessions are devoted to match students with supervisors and topics. In mid-April, students are required to outline their topic at a seminar attended by staff in order to get final approval.

Entry

Minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the program are the completion of the pass degree with an overall WAM of 65, a WAM of 70 in your major, and the successful completion of 25020 Applied Regression Analysis (required for entry from 2011 onwards). Applications are required by the closing date which is in late November (details from the Student Centre) and students should be advised of the success of their application by mid-December.

Scholarships

Several scholarships are available to honours students. These scholarships usually offer $5,000 (tax free) and are provided by the faculty, the discipline group and industry.
