Visitors in the School of Accounting

Dr Maria Balatbat
Australian School of Business, The University of New South Wales

Dr Maria Balatbat visited the School in September 2007 and presented a research paper on "An investigation of China's split share structure reform and its effects on the capital markets".

Dr Balatbat's research interests are in the areas of initial public offerings, corporate governance, corporate financial analysis and earnings management, among others, and has published her work in Accounting and Finance.
 

Professor Steven Cahan
The University of Auckland Business School

Professor Steven Cahan visited the School in October 2007 and presented a research paper on "Auditor Specialization: The Influence of Investment Opportunities".

Professor Cahan visited the School in May 1998 and presented a research paper. He also consulted with Honours/PhD students and staff. He returned in September 2001 and presented a research paper.

Professor Cahan is a Professor of Financial Accounting and PhD Director for the Business School. He has published over 35 academic research articles, and his current research focuses on three areas: (1) the effects of the demise of the accounting firm Arthur Andersen, (2) the effects of country-level institutional factors on earnings and accounting disclosures, and (3) auditor specialisation and audit effort. In 2005, he received a Research Excellence Award for Sustained Research from the Business School.
 

Professor Peter Clarkson
The University of Queensland Business School

Professor Peter Clarkson visited the School in October 2007 and presented a research paper on "The Impact of IFRS on the Value Relevance of Book Value and Earnings: A Log-Linear Valuation Approach".

Professor Clarkson's current research interests include the role of information in the pricing of equity securities, voluntary disclosure and the quality of disclosure in annual reports, and the pricing of initial public offerings (IPOs). His work has been published in academic journals such as the Journal of Accounting and Economics, Contemporary Accounting Research, the Journal of Finance, and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, as well as in professional periodicals. He is currently an Associate Editor of Contemporary Accounting Research and the national examiner for financial management for the Certified General Accountants' of Canada.
 

Professor Daniel W. Collins
Tippie College of Business, University of Iowa

Professor Daniel W. Collins visited the School in March 2007. He presented a research paper on "Corporate governance and backdating of executive stock options" and conducted the 28th Distinguished International Visitors Lecture Series.

Professor Collins is the Henry B. Tippie Research Chair in Accounting at the University of Iowa. Professor Collins’ area of expertise is focused on financial accounting; empirical assessments and earnings quality; the role of earnings and other accounting numbers in struggles for corporate control; and corporate governance and its effects on debt and equity cost of capital.

A prolific writer and frequent contributor to the top academic accounting journals, he has been recognized as one of the top ten most highly cited authors in the accounting literature over the last 20 years. Professor Collins currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Accounting Research and was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Accounting & Economics in 2001. He received the American Accounting Association Outstanding Educator Award in 2001.
 

Professor Dan Dhaliwal
Eller College of Management, The University of Arizona

Professor Dan Dhaliwal will be visiting the School from 16-20 June 2008.

Professor Dan Dhaliwal first visited the School in July 2001. He returned to the School in July 2002 and presented a research paper on "The Effect of Payout Policy, Institutional Ownership and Shareholder Income Taxes on the Relation Between Earnings and Returns". Professor Dhaliwal visited the School again from October 2003 to February, in July 2004, November 2004, May 2005, November 2005, June 2006, November 2006, May 2007 and November 2007.

Professor Dhaliwal is the Head of the Department of Accounting in the University of Arizona, as well as the Lou Myers Professor of Accounting and a Professor of Finance. His research interests include taxes and economic behavior; economic consequences of disclosure and accounting regulations; and management reaction to and choice of accounting alternatives. His research results have been published in the FASB Research Report Series, The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and several other accounting and economics journals.
 

Professor Paul Healy
Havard Business School, Havard University

Professor Healy visited the School in March 2002. He presented a research paper and conducted a two-day seminar. He then visited the School in February 2008 to conduct the 11th Annual UTS Summer Accounting Symposium.

Professor Healy's research includes studies of how firms' disclosure strategies affect their costs of capital, how investors interpret firms' dividend policy and capital structure decisions, the performance of merging firms after mergers, and the effect of managerial compensation and lending contracts on financial reporting. His work has been published in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and Journal of Financial Economics. In 1990, his article "The Effect of Bonus Schemes on Accounting Decisions," published in Journal of Accounting and Economics, was awarded the AICPA/AAA Notable Contribution Award. His text Business Analysis and Valuation was awarded the AICPA/AAA's Wildman Medal for contributions to the practice in 1997, and the AICPA/AAA Notable Contribution Award in 1998.
 

Professor Zahirul Hoque
Department of Accounting, La Trobe University

Professor Zahirul Hoque visited the School in May 2007 and presented a research paper on "Organizational change and management control in a not-for-profit church organization: A qualitative field study".

Professor Hoque is the Chair in Accounting in La Trobe University. He is on the CPA Australia Geelong Branch Council. His research interests include accounting and organizational change, management accounting, performance management, public sector accounting, and a general interest in the interdisciplinary research in organisational designs. He has published a number of articles, book chapters, two edited volumes and two books, namely Handbook of Cost and Management Accounting and Strategic Management Accounting.
 

Professor Kerry Jacobs
School of Accounting and Business Information Systems, The Australian National University

Professor Kerry Jacobs visited the School in May 2007 and presented a research paper on "Accounting vs politics: Exploring the early work of the Victorian committee of public accounts".

Professor Jacobs’ research interests are focused on issues of public sector accountability, governance, audit, financial management and reform, particularly the relationship between accounting and politics. He is currently on the editorial board of three journals with an interest in public sector accountability and governance: Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, Financial Accountability & Management and Journal of Accounting and Organizational Change. Professor Jacobs also has research interests in accounting in religious organisations and the links between culture and accounting.
 

Professor Teemu Malmi
Helsinki School of Economics

Professor Teemu Malmi was a visiting professor at the School in 2005. He then visited the School again in March, August 2006, January/February 2007 and November 2007.

Professor Malmi’s teaching and research focus mainly on managerial control systems, strategy implementation and cost and profitability accounting. He teaches regularly in number of executive education programs.

Professor Malmi has served as a consultant to a wide range of private organizations in the following industries: Agricultural, Computers, Energy, Finance, Food processing, Furniture, Health Care, Media, Metal and Engineering, Paper and Pulp, Pharmaceuticals, Rental Services, Retail, Telecom and Transportation/logistics. He has also experience form public organizations, including ministries, municipalities and hospitals. Professor Malmi is a member of the board at QPR Software Oyj, and WaveQ Systems Oy.

Professor Malmi has published both in academic journals and in the trade press. His articles have been published in Accounting, Organization & Society, Journal of Management Accounting Research, Management Accounting Research, European Accounting Review, and Finnish Journal of Business Economics. He serves on the editorial board of Management Accounting Research. His most recent book is Tietoteknikan Mahdollisuudet Taloushallinnon Kehittämisessä (Information Technology as a Tool to Develop Accounting Function's Business Support) with M. Granlund.
 

Dr Reza Monem
Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics, Griffith University

Dr Reza Monem visited the School in April 2007 and presented a research paper on "Has earnings quality declined over time? Australian evidence".

Dr Monem's research interests are in the area of corporate governance, earnings quality and earnings management, corporate collapse, international accounting, and accounting education. His papers are published in Accounting and Finance and Contemporary Accounting Research.
 

Dr Marvin Wee
Business School, The University of Western Australia

Dr Marvin Wee visited the School in September 2007 and presented a research paper on "The Impact of the Adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards on Corporate Communication: Australian Evidence".

Dr Wee's research interests are in the area of market microstructure capital markets company financial disclosures.
 

Dr Monte Wynder
Faculty of Business, University of the Sunshine Coast

Dr Monte Wynder visited the School in June 2007 and presented a research paper on "An Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Performance-Based Rewards on Standard Cost Variance Analysis".

Dr Wynder's research has included the study of the effects of instruction and practice on the acquisition of accounting knowledge. His current research is focused on the effects of management accounting control system design on creativity as manifest in continuous improvement programs in organisations.
