Precincts and buildings

The UTS City and Kuring-gai campuses each contain a variety of precincts and buildings, catering to all teaching, learning, research, social, and administrative activities. These maps will help staff, students, and visitors find buildings, venues and facilities they are looking for.

City Campus has three precincts, Haymarket, Broadway and Blackfriars right in Sydney’s cosmopolitan central business district (CBD) and is surrounded by local attractions. Kuring-gai Campus is close to the suburb of Chatswood and is surrounded by Lane Cove National Park (see Kuring-gai campus tab on top of the map).

Precincts

The UTS City Campus is made up of 3 building clusters called precincts, as well as various other administrative and student accommodation buildings.
UTS's Kuring-gai campus has no precincts per se as all buildings are located on one site.

The university is currently implementing its City Campus Master Plan, a massive overhaul of the campus involving four new buildings and a number of major refurbishments, re-locations, and new social hubs. The Master Plan will better integrate these precincts, delivering an iconic and pedestrian-friendly campus.

    Broadway precinct

The Broadway precinct is centred around the landmark Tower, Building 1 (CB01) on Broadway, a short walk from Sydney's transport hub, Central Station.

In the Broadway precinct, visitors will find the Tower, Building 1 (CB01) and adjoining Building 2 (CB02), Bon Marche, Building 3 (CB03) and Building 4 (Science, CB04). All of these are located in the square  bounded by Broadway and Jones, Harris, and Thomas Streets. These buildings surround Alumni Green, a central open space under which is the Multi-Purpose Sports Hall.

The Peter Johnson Building (or DAB Building), Building 6 (CB06) is on the eastern side of Harris Street. Building 10 (CB10) is on the western side of Jones Street.

Various student housing buildings complete the precinct.

    Haymarket precinct

Only five minutes walk from the Broadway precinct, the Haymarket precinct sits at the edge of Chinatown and Darling Harbour. It houses the Business and Law faculties and the UTS Blake Library (CM05A) all in Building 5 (CM05), an adapted heritage building. Mary Anne House (CH01) on Harris Street is also part of this precinct.

The UTS Blake Library clock tower stands on the corner of Quay Street and Ultimo Road. There is also a sidewalk café and leafy courtyards where students hang out, relax, and study.

    Blackfriars precinct

Blackfriars buildings are located a block west of Tower, Building 1 (CB01) on the opposite side of Broadway (behind Notre Dame University Campus). Access is via Blackfriars Street and Buckland Street.

Buildings

There are over 60 buildings and some 900 seminar and tutorial rooms spread across the UTS City and Kuring-gai campuses. However, once you understand the UTS: Building and Room Identification Standard outlined below, finding your way around UTS is quite straight forward.

Buildings have a four-character code, made from two letters describing a geographic location and two numerals that use existing building numbers.

The geographic location codes are:

  • CB City Campus, Broadway
  • CC City Campus, Blackfriars, Chippendale
  • CM City Campus, Haymarket
  • CQ City Campus, 10 Quay Street, Haymarket
  • KG Kuring-gai Campus
CB04.03.05

Room numbers indicate Building ID.Floor No.Room No. For example,
Room 5 on floor 3 of Building 4 on City Campus, Broadway, would be CB04.03.05.

Preferred paths

UTS has identified a 'Preferred Paths' network to help improve the safety of staff, students and visitors on its City Campus. This includes a number of future paths, which will be implemented through improved management and design.

People commuting between the Haymarket and Broadway precincts, especially, should take note of these paths. These paths will help the UTS community take full advantage of the inner-city location of the City Campus while avoiding some of the pitfalls such as busy traffic.

The routes are available on a PDF (172k).

Lifts

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) is about providing a fair go for Australians with disabilities. Its focus is on addressing the physical and attitudinal barriers that prevent people with disabilities from making the most of their abilities and participating more fully in the community. As a result, UTS is attempting to eliminate, ‘as far as possible’, discrimination on the ground of disability by providing lifts in every UTS building, in both the City and Kuring-gai campuses. UTS continually promotes community acceptance of the rights of people with disabilities.

Computing and printing facilities

Computing facilities are available to UTS staff and students for academic teaching, coursework, learning, and research. Many of the labs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Every UTS Lab has a 15-minute Express Machine, at least one colour scanner, access to a Laser Printer, and an internal phone.

So no matter where you are studying at UTS, you will have access to up-to-date technology and software needed to effectively and efficiently undertake your studies. The General Access Computer Labs are based on two different computer platforms - Mac OS and Windows.

You will need your UTS Student/ID Card with you at all times when using the Computing Facilities.

The Service Desk Knowledge Base contains useful information relating to making effective use of the Resource Centre; this includes Colour Scanning, and burning information to CDs and DVDs.

Please note: All PC Computers within UTS General Access Computing Facilities need to close down for maintenance every two days. For more information regarding these maintenance times please contact the IT Support Centre Off Campus on (02) 9514 2222, or On Campus dial x 2222. If you require further assistance visit the UTS Service Desk.

WiFi access

The UTS wireless network allows students and staff to access the UTS network including UTS website, UTS online resources, and the internet for work or educational purposes. All you need is a wireless ready laptop or PDA and the appropriate software and drivers installed.

Wireless access is available in multiple locations at the Broadway and Market Campuses, and the Kuring-gai Campus, including public space areas to maximise coverage and comfort when undertaking study or research.

This map only provides a list of all known public space wireless networks; the 'Hotspot Locations' to receive the highest WiFi connectivity and strength levels on your laptop computers. WiFi is also available in a large majority of classrooms, study areas, and lecture theatres.
For full details on all 'Hotspot Locations' visit UTS Wireless and UTS-WPA Hotspots/Locations.

For more information, including how to login to access the wireless network, visit the UTS Wireless Networks website.

Study areas

UTS is constantly providing new group learning and informal study spaces to form part of UTS’s new approach to teaching and learning on campus. These public spaces enable staff and students to undertake both individual and group work.

The universities study areas, particularly those in the City Campus, are encouraging the UTS City Campus MasterPlan concept of a ‘sticky campus’ in which students and staff have the ability to share knowledge, and access resources in both formal and informal environments.

Most of these study areas provide students with wireless connectivity, as well as access to power.
